Available Art Returns!
A couple of weeks ago the cosmetics giant Ronald Lauder shelled out 135 million dollars for a Klimt painting. Now don't get us wrong here - Klimt was a highly amusing character with an extraordinary talent - but 135 big ones does seem rather a lot for a painting, albeit a sensational one. And the thing is, even if we ignore the immortal names like Klimt or Monet, the fact remains that this is an age where exciting art is unattainable to the normal art lover - if you want to buy some original art, become a billionaire first.
But hold on a second! For something is stirring in the old city of Cracow. That's right, the phenomenon of 'Available Art' is on its way. And on 14th July 2006, a new exhibition will open in the city's favourite gallery, Camelot, just north of the main square at ul. Sw. Tomasza 17.
In Camelot's magical halls, visitors will be able to savour all kinds of art, from animated films to abstract installations and paintings. And the big difference is, this time you really might be able to take something home. The guideline of the show is that the art submitted - which comes from the hands of both local and international artists - should be priced in the region of 1-150 Euros. Indeed, you may even find something there for a single euro, so you won't have to spend the rest of your holiday eating bread and water.
This is already the third such Available Art Show in Cracow, following hot on the heels of last year's success. This time there is a special theme - 'Away' - exploring the ideas of travelling, moving and changing places. The grand opening of the exhibition will be at 7pm on July 14th, and the gallery will be open daily for three weeks thereafter. We'll see you there!
