Cracovian Girl Advances!
It seems that whenever we celebrate a Polish sporting triumph, the player/team in question promptly suffers a catastrophic defeat in the next clash. With this in mind, we were somewhat wary about following the progress of a certain Cracovian girl at this year's Wimbledon. But what the heck - Agnieszka Radwanska is through to the fourth round and victory is in sight - the Holy Wimbledon Grail is ever nearer!
Well, that's probably enough to ensure a complete wipe-out at the hands of Belgian champ Kim Clijsters in the fourth round. If so, we sincerely apologise to Miss Radwanska. However, we simply felt we couldn't let her odyssey pass unmentioned any longer.
Seventeen-year-old Radwanska, who won the Wimbledon Womens' Tournament for juniors last year, is Poland's brightest hope in tennis for many moons. In fact, the last time a Pole did this well was in 1937, when Jadwiga Jedzejowska (also a Cracovian) was pipped to the post in the womens' final.
