One of the major exhibitions of the season is due to open this week at the main branch of the National Museum. Jozef Pankiewicz (1866 - 1940) was a pioneer of Polish Impressionism and he remains amongst the best loved artists in the country. If you're new to Polish art you could hardly do better than head over to the National, whose summer show is complimented by the freshly renovated Gallery of Polish Art - one of Cracow's cultural highlights!
The summer exhibition dovetails with the 140th anniversary of Pankiewicz's birth, and it has already travelled from Warsaw to Poznan. Although Polish artists were largely forgotten in the West during the Cold War era, Pankiewicz was garlanded with awards in the 1920's and 30's. He spent many years in France, and in 1926 he was made a Chevalier de la Legion d' Honneur. His lush, dreamy style is likely to prove a crowd-pleaser with visitors, who will be able to savour dozens of oils by the master. The opening will be at 6pm on 13th June, whilst on Wednesday the exhibition will officially get underway.
