A hero of Polish football passed away on Tuesday after a long battle with illness. Kazimierz Gorski, who was 85 this year, saw the Polish team through the glory days of the 1970s.
During Gorski's spell as the Polish coach, his squad won gold at the Munich Olympics (1972), silver in the World Cup (1974) and silver once more at the Montreal Olympic Games (1976).
Gorski was born in the city of Lwow (now Lviv, Ukraine), where he attained legendary status for his nimble style as a forward. He was nicknamed 'Sarenka' - the Deer. However, his career on the field was scuppered by the war, and he was compelled to resettle in Warsaw after the conflict.
Gorski is fondly remembered as a warm, effusive man - characteristics that were typical of his native Lwow - a city whose merriness was once proverbial.
