It has often been acknowledged that Poland has the worst road accident rate in Europe, and this week's public holidays have revealed that matters are still a long, long way from improvement.
Poor roads and increased traffic helped to contribute to some seventy-seven fatalities over the last five days as travellers drove to and from holiday destinations. Weather conditions did not help, with periods of both heavy rain and baking heat.
Radio Polonia also reports that as many as one thousand people sustained injuries and that three and a half thousand drivers were detained for drunk in command of a vehicle.
