Cracow Photomonth Opens!

One of the most cherished cultural events of the year opens today in Cracow. The Month of Photography, now in its fourth year, will be hosting exhibitions by scores of photographers from Poland and beyond.

Every self-respecting bar and cafe will be staging a show - some will be sublime, others sublimely bad. But that's very much the charm of the festival, and sorting the wheat from the chaff is all part of the fun.

There will be a flurry of exhibition openings over the next week or so, and you can find some picks listed online in our events calendar. For a full programme, drop into the Cracow cultural office at ul. Sw. Jana 2, or download the file from www.photomonth.com.

Today sees two events, including the official opening down in Podgorze at 6pm in Galeria Starmach (ul. Wegierska 5) where there will be a show by Henrik Spohler. Art enthusiasts can also catch the opening of Bogdan Konopka's show at 4.30pm at the Srodmiejski Cultural Centre (ul. Mikolajska 2).

Hungary is in the spotlight this year, and a band of special guests will be launching a joint show, 'Budapest Feeling', at the former Okocim brewery this Saturday at 4.30pm (ul. Lubicz 17). Expect plenty of revelry accompanying each opening - as the old expression goes: 'The Pole and the Magyar like brothers stand, Whether with sword or with tankard in hand.' Enjoy the festival!
