A major new landmark - or watermark to be more precise - is set to appear on Cracow's horizon next month. A sleek vessel will be moored on the bend in the Vistula not far from the Royal Castle. The modern barge will house a restaurant, a cafe, a tourist information point and an internet cafe. Regular concerts of jazz and classical music will be held, and a small shop selling postcards and other souvenirs is set to be included in the enterprise.
This is not the first project of its kind on the River Vistula - the Pod Aniolami restaurant has done something similar for several years now, although their venture is purely gastronomic and only open during warmer months. The new establishment will be open all year round.
All in all, the possibilities of the river - one of Cracow's trump cards - remain wide open for the developing city. There are already several strong ideas in the pipeline. These include a plan to create a footbridge that will span the river, linking the castle area with the acclaimed Manggha Cultural Centre. Meanwhile, an elegant Krakow hotel with a view over the castle is set to open this Summer, designed by local architect, Mariusz Twardowski, descendent of a distinguished Cracovian sorcerer....
