The Easter Market opened today on Cracow's Maly Rynek (Little Market Square). Renovation works prevented the event from taking place at it's usual spot, the Main Market Square, but the move is a happy coincidence, as it's prompted the zapping of the car park on Maly Rynek.
Before the war, markets were held regularly on the smaller square, but in recent years, only cars have graced this pretty little plaza behind St. Mary's. As of today, strollers can head over and soak up the festive spirit (and listen to some reggae at the same time). All the usual knick-knacks are on sale, including painted eggs, Polish palms, handmade baskets, as well as some less traditional stuff that children will be sure to enjoy smashing as soon as they get home. However, Christmas and Easter wouldn't be the same without some smashing of toys and squashing of Easter eggs. This scribbler's favourite dog used to scale bookcases and cupboards in his epic search for chocolate eggs.
Before we disappear into some other corner of cyberspace, we're tentatively passing on some interesting news. We've heard whispers that the Maly Rynek car park is being jettisoned for good this time. We're not going to count our Easter chickens just yet, as three years ago, the city promised to pulverize the ulica Szeroka car park, and nothing has materialized. But hope springs eternal....
