The celebrated writer Stanislaw Lem was laid to rest at midday yesterday at Cracow's Salwator Cemetery. In contrast to the funerals of other national luminaries, the service was markedly short. No speeches were made over the grave, and the brief service was dominated by the singing of hymns.
The funeral had great dignity, and the period of silence during the laying of the wreaths visibly moved the hundreds gathered.
The grave of the departed offers a sweeping panorama over the surrounding valley - there is a suggestion of infinity in this hillside setting that would certainly have appealed to Mr Lem. He will be sorely missed.
