Report Exposes Warehouse Faults
Faulty construction and excessive snow on the roof were responsible for the collapse of the Trade Hall in Katowice, the capital of southern Silesia. A report of a special commission investigating the causes of the accident has been made public by transport and construction minister Jerzy Polaczek. The tragedy occurred two months ago. 65 people were killed and 141 hospitalised with severe injuries when the snow-covered 100 thousand square meter roof of the giant metal structure caved in during an international bird exhibition.
The management of the Trade Hall has been charged with maintenance negligence. Three company board members, including one foreigner, were arrested immediately after the tragedy and remain in custody.
