Poles Recall Ghetto Tragedy
Observances of the 64th anniversary of the liquidation of the Lublin Jewish ghetto have been held in that eastern Polish city.
On the night of March 16th, 1942 its inhabitants were deported by the Nazis to the nearby Majdanek concentration camp where some 4000 of them were exterminated.
An open air performance recalling the names of the innocent victims of this act of genocide was staged by one of the local theater companies.
Kadish, the Jewish prayer for the dead, was said and lights in the former Jewish quarter were put out. For the past five years the organizers of the observances have been asking young participants to reflect on this war related tragedy and register their impressions. They are to be published in the future under a project titled ‘Letters To The Ghetto’.
