The Catholic Church in Poland has apologized for the harm caused by those priests who collaborated with the communist secret police.

A statement issued by Polish bishops says that under a system that crushed people’s consciences, some men of the Church also breached the trust placed in them. The bishops warned against creating an atmosphere of sensationalism and accusation. According to historians, around 10 percent of Polish priests collaborated with the secret services during the communist period.
