The city has announced that the final wave of renovation of the Planty Gardens is to begin this month. The leafy border to the Old Town is one of Cracow's best-loved features, originally laid out after the Napoleonic Wars when Cracow was a free city.
The Planty Gardens follow the line of the former defensive walls and moats. The wall was dismantled in the nineteenth century as it had become outdated, although thankfully, a small portion was saved in the north, complete with four picturesque towers.
The rejuvenation of the Planty has spanned decades as the city repeatedly ran out of funds. However, it looks like the final wave is due to start, and at a cost of seven million zloties.
Besides the revamps for the so-called 'Barbican' and 'Florian' sections, a new fountain is due to be constructed opposite the Philharmonic Hall, echoing the form of a grand piano.
