Poland striker Grzegorz Rasiak has left Tottenham Hotspur for Southampton in a loan deal expected to become permanent for a fee of about STG2 million ($A4.7 million) at the end of the season, Tottenham says.

Southampton have also signed midfielder Richard Chaplow on loan from West Bromwich Albion.

Rasiak, who joined Spurs from Derby County in August has made nine appearances for the north London club but has failed to score.

He is expected to be in Poland's squad for the World Cup finals in Germany in June.

Tottenham manager Martin Jol told the club's website: "I am disappointed that (the move) did not work out better. Grzegorz wants to play football every week, particularly in a World Cup year and I respect that. I wish him well at Southampton."

Rasiak was signed as cover for Spurs Egyptian striker Mido, but has failed to make an impression on any of his appearances.

Mido could return to Spurs in time for Sunday's (Monday morning AEDT) Premier League match against Sunderland after his expulsion from the Egyptian squad at the African Nations Cup.
