Poland On Steady European Course

Poland's integration with the EU is very advanced and it is very improbable that Poland could have an EU-hostile government, Polish Foreign Minister Stefan Meller said in an interview for the Austria APA agency published on Sunday.

Poland is on a steady European course and I don't believe our Euroskeptics will have a bigger say on the matter, Meller remarked, reminding that 77.5 percent of Poles had voted for EU accession.

Asked about Austrian chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel's recent proposal of an EU tax on financial deals and international air tickets, Meller said the idea was "interesting and original" but needed further debate.

This must first be discussed on the national and international level, Meller said.

The EU constitution is ailing but not dead, Meller said Friday in Vienna after talks with Austrian counterpart Ursula Plassnik.

Commenting the constitution's rejection by Holland and France, Meller suggested Europe "devote some thought on how this document should look in future". He also praised Austria's EU presidency.

Plassnik said after the talks that she and Meller had mainly discussed EU tasks for the coming months, economic growth and security issues. On January 1 Austria took over the rotating presidency of the EU.
