Projects For Public Spaces, a prestigious international organization, has declared Krakow's Rynek Glowny as the World's Best Square.
Krakow triumphed over other well known plazas such as Rome's Piazza Navona, Sienna's Piazza del Campo, Prague's Old Town Square and Isfahan's Imam Square.
'The largest square in Europe also happens to be the best' enthuses PPS. 'The Rynek Glowny is so dynamic, it pulls you in from anywhere in the city. All roads in Krakow lead you here, and the closer you get, the livelier the streetlife becomes. There is so much going on in this square - at least twenty different attractions at any given time - that it makes our "Power of Ten" rule seem inadequate.'
We heartily agree with PPS's choice, but as our roving editor Dastardly Duncan pointed out, the square's not much to look at at the moment as renovation works have left the plaza looking like 'a dog's half-eaten breakfast.'
What's more, Dastardly D adds that Wroclaw's Main Square gives Cracow's plaza a good run for its money ( see wroclaw-life.com). Plenty to debate there then.
