Without doubt one of the top restaurants in Cracow, and with a whole raft of awards to prove it, Pod Aniolami (Under the Angels) is famous for its marinated meats, cooked on an elm wood-fired grill, as well as other traditional specialities. The restaurant can be found along the "Royal Way" leading from Wawel Castle to the Rynek (Market Square), in a splendid 13th Century building. It's genuine Old Cracow, with its own medieval courtyard with a mosaic-encrusted fountain to prove it.

Pod Aniolami

The building was fantastic and the food and service ok but this place charges twice the price of other quality Cracow restaurants hence the low mark.

This place is wonderful. Have been visiting for years and it really never fails to impress. Excellent service and food to die for! Definitely worth a visit!

We spent two nights in Krakow and the first night ate at Pod Aniolami, downstairs in their beautiful cellar. The meal and service were both very good and we would definitely go back there. The second evening we had a meal in Resto Illuminati on Golebia Street, just off the main square. We all thought it was fantastic! The food was amazing (and not expensive!) and the restaurant is lovely and has a great atmosphere. I think it's new to Krakow. Definitely worth a visit!

Great dumplings for starters but traditional Polish Pork was huge disappointment.

reviewed by John Loraine Irene Alan from United Kingdom on Nov.22.2008

What a huge disappointment and bill to match! Food was mediocre at best and everything that wasn't barbequed was microwaved, worse still, in front of us. Service was OK, but we had to call the waitress over to ask for more drinks and the bill. We went to this place at Christmas and last month and had better meals, but I think they are now living off their reputation. For the price, they really do have to raise their game. Try Cyrano de Bergerac- brilliant in every way, but watch the price of the wine!

reviewed by Angela Adam from United Kingdom on Aug.23.2008

Well my meal was ok. The place is interesting. To be honnest i was not really impressed but its worth checking it yourself.

NB. about the service, the girl was nice and smilling but she didn't know how to open a bottle of wine, personally i don't care but well it was amusing sort off.

Best pierogi in town! Could eat them all day! Not the cheapest prices though, so better as a nice treat every once and a while!

reviewed by Michael from United Kingdom on Mar.11.2008

After reading reviews on here, think we must have hit a bad night because we were not impressed. Food was nothing special and the spinach side-dish was only lukewarm. Worse, we were sitting upstairs by part of the cooking area and I could see a staff member spooning the pre-prepared spinach into dishes and putting in a microwave to warm up. And more expensive than Miod Malina where we had a much better meal.

We wanted a special evening for my birthday when we were there this past June, the food was wonderful, they made my evening very special, the service impeccable. Found this site as I am still dreaming of their Pierogi. If ever in Crakow, we will be visiting this restaurant again.

Turned up at 9.45pm on a Friday night - told that they stopped serving at 10pm-bit disappointing. Went back next day (as it had been recommended to us before travelling). Booked a table for 5pm (at 2pm) and when we went back at 5pm - they had no record of our booking. Thankfully the staff member whom we spoke with was still working and she remembered us. Thankfully because it was such a pleasant meal - prices not the cheapest in Krakow, but the service was great, smiling-Uk workers take note- food excellent and plentiful. Would highly recommend.

We had a wonderful time here, the food was excellent, it isn't the cheapest place to eat in Cracow, but definatley one of the best, and in comparison to what we pay in the UK it was truley excellent. quality of service and the wine we brilliant

Booked a table for 8.00 on a Saturday evening and the place was about a third full. The cellar restaurant is very atmospheric with an abundance of waiting staff and very good service.
The food was nice but not outstanding.
I had the knuckle of pork which was very tasty but somewhat spoilt by the large garnish of lettuce which added nothing to the dish.
Service and ambeiance aside, the food did not justify the fairly high prices.
In Krakow you can eat much better food for less money.

Pod Aniolami lives up to it's reputation. Make reservations the day ahead or you will not get in. The prices are no more expensive than other nice restaurants in Krakow. The cabbage and mushroom dumplings are divine .... those alone are worth going for. Service was great. Overall a very pleasurable experience. Pod Aniolami should not be missed on your trip in Krakow.

Amazing!! I booked well in advance via email and although the reservation had been "lost" somewhere along the way we were seated and were treated to a fabulous meal. Staff were polite & spoke good English. Highly reccomend the yummy dumplings, they truly deserve the title they own for the best in Krakow!

Listen ... there are many good eateries in Krakow and this is not the best. However out of peak tourist times, this is a really nice relaxed place to eat. Many traditional polish dishes to chose from, the meat in Poland is still way better than you could find in most places in the UK (although I can't help feeling that quality is slowly decreasing as Poland is forced to compete is a price-first euro market place, but you can't blame Pod Aniolami for that!) and a lot of the preparation work is done up front which I like. The waitresses are just wonderful, can be slightly aloof, but still pretty as walking pictures! So there you have it, good food in nice surroundings and still maintaining reasonable standards despite being slap in the centre of the tourist mill. Recommended for sure.

Excellent food, fantastic space but we did have to wait quite a while between our main course and our starter and although the waiters were very friendly it was difficult to get their attention. Worth going though for the great food and decor.

My boyfriend and I reserved a table here for my 22nd birthday based on the excellent reviews I had read about pod aniolami on this website. We weren't dissapointed! The food was amazing, I've never tasted meat like this anywhere in england! The atmosphere was fantastic and the service was great. The waiter spoke excellent english too and made an extra fuss of us because it was my birthday, bringing us flaming vodka shots! Would definitely eat here again! Its probably one of the best restaurants in Krakow and for an amazing dining experience we paid approximately average UK prices for an ok meal out.
Make a reservation the night before you go.

We visited Pod Aniolami on the 24th August'2006 for our Wedding Aniversary. We had an excellent meal, the food and service was superb. I recommend you make a reservation though as we did earlier that day, as people turning up ad hoc were asked if they had a reservation and were turned away if they did'nt. A truly excellent experience that made our anniversary all the more special.

I ate here twice this week and had to post a review again. The food as usual was wonderful. Definately try the pirogy with meat and cranberry sauce. My first visit this week wait staff could have been more friendlier and last night it was over the top, great service, smiles, our waitress was great. This is the best Polish restaurant in Krakow.

nothing special. was least favourite of half a dozen restaurants we went to and while not the most expensive, we went to much cheaper. Booking is bizarre. We saw they turned people away when many tables empty. This is tourist factory feeding style at its worst. So many wonderful other places to try.

Yummy food! We arrived in frozen from much walking that day and the staff immeidately made us feel welcome. We had a lovely table in a quiet corner. I had lamb steaks that were divine and my OH had veal which he thought wonderful too. The veg and garnishes were lovely and desert excellent too. Service were excellent - efficient and polite. All in all probably our favourite restaurant of all we tried.

Went to this restaurant based on reviews from this site. I couldn't shake the feeling that i was in some Disney themed restaurant. The food was good, the Lard starter definitely worth trying. Good value for money. Staff were a little all over the joint and couldn't muster much enthusiasm when asked about their recommendations. All in all a little disapointing.

we ate here dec 26, 2005. we say it is "OK"

the interior is fine but krakow has so many fine barrel vaulted eating and drinking establishments that this one is ordinary.

it is completely unpretentious. paer napkins and inexpensive flatware, trestle tables, and benches against the wall.

the chefs"special" mushroom soup was good but a thin broth. other venues have served a better mushroom soup. my wife had lamb which was very well done. we normally eat lamb medium rare. i had the king's shaslik. the pork was quite tender but absolutely rare. most americans would not eat pork this lightly cooked. however, having traveled to europe many times pork here is generally less well done than in the states. a german man eating raw ground pork on rye bread for breakfast one morning." so trichinosis is not a worry.
our waiter spoke excellent english and was friendlier than some of the staff who did not seem to want to move out of the way to allow us through the narrow doorways.

we went based on reviews but krakow has so many restaurants to choose from i don't think we would visit here again

I first visted Pod Aniolami in August 1999. This year, (2005), I spent 5 days in Krakow and was determined to re-visit. I arranged a booking via email for a Thursday night and was delighted to find that I was given a choice of two tables. The service, the staff, the atmosphere and the food were superb. It's just 2 mins walk from one corner of the main square - If you look on the websites for the best places to eat in Krakow, Pod Aniolami will rate amongst the best, they get that rating for good reason - I've tried most of the resteraunts in the 'Old Town' and Pod Aniolami stands Head & Shoulders above then ALL. The menu cannot be beaten, for both food and wime..

It was only by chance that we popped into this restaurant. And we also didn't have a table reservation. But luckily there were space for us because the food was really excellent. A bit expensive but definately good value for the money. Can warmly recommend.

I can't say enough about this excellent Polish restaurant. Imagine eating the best food you can imagine in a forest clearing. Massive wooden pillars, high ceiling, singing birds, bubbling water feature reflecting the light, trees seemingly growing up the walls, massive candle chandeliers, huge ovens roasting interesing-looking foodstuffs (although nothing we ordered actually came out of them), and an incredibly helpful waiter. The pierogi and the szarlotka were out of this world. Certainly the best meal we had: as lavish as we could get with loads of courses, wine and vodka, and still unbelievably great value. If this is Polish food, then I want more!

Well, theyalways told me to mistrust in main street restaurants! Ul.Grodzkait's main street in Stare miasto...and they were right!I've waited for 10 min. to have a table(it was nearly empty!)..they said "ask downstairs", and down said "ask upstairs"!CRAZY!..then sitted,i ordered a dish and saw they warmed it up in microwave!INCREDIBLE!I'd give -5/5 as vote, but it's not possible!

Pod Aniolami came highly recommended, however, the sight of depressed birds in tiny, dirty cages made our cold, over salted meals even less enjoyable...

It's definitely worth visiting Pod Aniolami - a lovely restaurant. However, I couldn't help being troubled by one or two things. For a start the birds. Its difficult not to feel a little sorry for those birds in the courtyard, despite the fact that the ambiance is so charming, and even though the bird house itself is rather stunningly beautiful. Perhaps this sounds ridiculous in the light of the wild boar that was being consuming on my plate (delicious and highly recommended), but all the same, I couldn't help feeling that those birds wanted to be swooping around Cracow with their friends, and not stuck in that tiny little house. It would be great to see some more dishes added to the menu too. However, all in all, this is still a highly agreeable restaurant with a Zurek that that is second to none.

reviewed by Nikolai from United Kingdom on Apr.23.2004

This place was brilliant, and its sister ship (quite literally) on the river was a great place to watch the sun go down. Service was excellent, ambience was relaxed and the food was better than we anticipated. Our only complaint was the chairs, but it paled to insignificance after everything else.

reviewed by Fran from United Kingdom on Nov.07.2003

Food was nice, but the service.... Waiters who forget what you ordered were the worst. We had to remind the waitress three times that we 1) want a glass of water 2) and two times for two drinks of this polish style krupnik liquor. Also they give your bread but no plate (maybe this is customary?) Anyway the service spoiled the evening it is hard to get their attention, and it seems that there was too little of them to service all the customers and on Friday evening! If that restaurant is the best in Cracow that these people have a lot to learn :(
