Pod Sloncem

There's a rather fine stone carving of Mr. Sun beaming down cheerfully over the diners in this popular cellar restaurant on the Main Market Square. The cellar itself is a fine example dating from the middle ages, and has been fitted out with comfortable and cosy eating booths. Friendly staff serve up rather good food to visitors and tourists alike, the most popular dish being the traditional skewered shashlyk, which is available in half a dozen different varieties. Pod Sloncem's cafe is open from 8 in the morning, when it serves up good coffee and reasonably-priced breakfasts. The cellar restaurant itself opens from midday to midnight.

"very cozy and quiet cellar, at least during the week. we came on a monday evening, there were a couple tables with people inside but not many, but outside it seemed pretty full. the service inside was quite good, we did wait a good 20 minutes for the food but the drinks were so good we didn't even really notice. huge portions that are very well prepared with a good selection of sides. if you can manage it, try the charlotka (apple pie) with ice cream for dessert - yum!"

"i prebooked a meal here for a group of family and friends on 21/03/2007.Although i had given two weeks notice there was only one person waiting our tables. He was unable to cope and the service was very very slow and rather shoddy and disorganised. The food arrived in dribs and drabs and some of it was almost cold. One of our party found an insect in their salad and left the premises. It was a really poor evening made worse by the fact that the owners knew two weeks in advance we had booked but simply didnt roster the staff to cope.It was a real shame as the menu was very varied with lots of variety.Sadly the food served was not very good, average at best.I certainly wouldnt eat here again"

"On our first day in Kracow, we came across this sign saying pub, so we followed the stairs down, it was what we were looking for. A cellar bar/restaurant, with a good atmosphere. The food was good, with large portions and reasonably priced. The service was good and the staff were friendly and efficient. We went back again and will go there again on our return next year. "

"Have just returned from a visit to Krakow this week . We ate at this restaurant 3 times and found it to be excellent each time . The waitress remembered what drinks we were having from previous visits . The portions are BIG so be ready for a full stomach . I am not a lover of vegetables , but the grated sweet Carrots are superb and should be savoured . As mentioned in a previous review , the Goulash in bread is wonderful . Prices are cheap , ie we had Polish Steak for less than Breakfast in our Hotel. Food arrived quickly and well presented . Only thing to watch out for are the stairs , winding and oddly spaced . We WILL return here ."

"I have eaten (and drank!) at this restaurant on two occasions.....and found it to be excellent quality and value. In fact it was so impressive I'm taking a party of 30 students there for a meal this summer!"

"We stopped by here in June 2006, and since the weather was so nice, we chose a spot among the outdoor tables looking out onto the main square. As a result, I can’t review the cellar or indoor service. Once we were seated, we were given menus and a server took our order pretty much right away. Everything went downhill from there. Our first drink didn’t arrive until 15 minutes after our order. I understand that there were a lot of people at the terrace that afternoon, so the wait staff had their hands full. However, I would have appreciated some kind of warning that my lunch order would take nearly half an hour – but not a word. There were several times when not a single server was on the terrace. People actually came, sat, and left again to find, and I quote, “a place where we can get some food and service.” Other reviews have also commented on staff shortages – obviously management is doing nothing to improve on this front. When my order did arrive, I was sorely disappointed by my chicken-and-veggie pancake topped with cheese. First, the dish was lukewarm at best. The cheese had started to harden and congeal, so I simply cut it away to get to the heart of the dish. Overboiled broccoli, tough-as-boots cubed chicken, a bland bread wrap. Aside from the view, eating here was truly an underwhelming experience. "

"Great atmosphere, waitress was rushed off her feet at the bar but we still got served quickly and the goulash soup in a loaf of bread was hearty as hearty could be. Great portions, 2 people, two courses, beer and vodka at the end all for under £16! "

"Can't remember if the waitress was beautiful. She was stressed though and told us that the wait for food could be one hour (honest we thought). With nothing else planned for the evening, we ordered some wine and decided to take a chance. We were rewarded! Excellent food, great atmosphere, really recommend - try to book. "
