The Aviation Museum

If you've read about the swashbuckling exploits of Polish pilots during the Battle of Britain (the gallant Poles were crucial in saving the day) then you won't want to miss this belter of a museum just east of Cracow's centre. It's located on an historic air-field that was the second largest Polish Air Force Field before the Second World War. Over a hundred aircrafts can be savoured, with everything from pre-war Polish fighter-planes to German Albatrosses, Spitfires and Soviet Kakaruzniks. Some of the exhibits are unique examples of their kind, so aviation fans are in for a treat!

The Aviation Museum

"I found this museum by taking a taxi, cost from centre of Cracow 19 zls. A really excellent museum with friendly staff. Superb for photography and do not miss the displays behind the main hanger. One of the best engine displays I have seen anywhere. Highly recommended to anyone with an interest in aviation."

"If you love planes, You;ll love this... but make sure you do your research before you leave home.. It's not that easy to find, But really worth it...There's some really unusuall stuff there - even a jet bi-plane - It's true many of the planes are rotting away, but that only adds to the atmosphere - But try not to go on a monday as the indoor display is closed..."

"this place offers an amazing and different perspective on old soviet era fighters and bombers. it really gives the feeling of the power of the old soviet reigime. alot of the exhibits there are old and rusting away, and give the place a really daunting, but at the same time an awesome experience."

"This is one of best surprises I have had on my visit to Poland, the aviation museum has so much to offer there is so much history in this one spot I spent many hours just walking around and taking so many photographys of the airplanes, engines, old WW1 fighter planes and even earlier then WW1 airplanes, and a special mention to the Spitfire Mk.XVI E. wonderful. to get so close to so many russian jets to inspect them up close was a great pleasure. I'm looking forward to my return to Poland and will be heading back to the Air Museum to see what new additions have been made to the museum"

"This is a superb collection - not to be missed . It is difficult to find and has almost no publicity . The local tourist body should appreciate what a treasure they have on their doorstep and do more to publicise it. I've been to many museums of flight and this is one of the best . Conrad is an excellent guide with an in depth knowledge not only of all the exhibits but of aviation in general. "

"The best day I had in Krakow. Old Tupolevs, crop srayers and Soviet-era rocket launchers! There's also a display of engines from model aircraft, so if you're into this sort of thing, you'll probably be in heaven!"

"Yes, this is a really excellent day out. If you're into early flight, this museum has just about the finest collection of pioneer engine technology, as well as pieces of framework of some of the very first planes ever built. For those into more modern aviation, there's a unique perspective of fighters from an Eastern Bloc viewpoint. Having visited Yeovilton and other similar museums in the UK, one's overall impression - what a huge waste of money on arms from both sides! Fascinating all the same."

Access is easy via the No 4 tram from Lubice get off at WIECZYSTA and walk 400m straight on to the museum. A must if youre a plane nut an interesting diversion if not. Recommended."
