This sombre museum is housed in Cracow's oldest surviving synagogue - the aptly named Old Synagogue. It may not be as beautiful as the baroque Isaac's synagogue, but the accompanying exhibition is better - a more wide-ranging treatment of the history of Cracow's Jews, if a little old-fashioned nonetheless. The building itself is evocative. Originally built in the fifteenth century, it was remodelled a century later, and that is the look that has come down to us today. War-time damage was significant but conservators managed to resurrect the building, and you can still find haunting traces of murals here and there from the sixteenth century.
