Teatr Ludowy

Teatr Ludowy, 'The People's Theatre', is one of the most famed enterprises in Nowa Huta, the 'ideal city' that the communists founded outside Cracow in 1949. The theatre itself was opened in 1955, and it has maintained a first class reputation for experimental theatre until this day. For many years it was said that Nowa Huta was famous for two things: steel and theatre. Jerzy Federowicz, who has held the reins since 1989, caused a sensation when he staged a season of Romeo and Juliet with two local gangs who used to regularly beat each other up on the football pitch outside the theatre.
