Teatr Stary

|
Remodelled many times over the ages, the Stary Teatr (Old Theatre) is indeed the oldest theatre in Poland. Today it boasts a magnificent art nouveau facade (although it could certainly do with a lick of paint chaps). It was here that femme fatale and grande dame of Polish theatre Helena Modrzejewska rose to fame, and a host of Poland's best directors have staged dramas here. It remains amongst the most prestigious theatres to perform in 'til this day, and culture vultures may also be intrigued be the small museum downstairs. The 'Maska' cellar cafe is a popular haunt of luminaries in the arts. |

A beautiful building that I'm lucky enough to see every day from my window! Very tasteful inside, with a broad repertoire of productions. Obviously the language is going to make it difficult for foreigners to fully appreciate the performances, but take it from me - this is the Old Vic of Poland!
