The Princes Czartoryski Museum

***The museum will be closed for renovation from 11 January 2010 until further notice.

You may not always get a princely welcome, but the museum itself ranks amongst the finest private museums in Europe. Initially founded as a patriotic endeavour during the era of Poland's collapse, the museum has had a dramatic history. It's a wonder that so much of the collection has survived at all. But survive it has, and here you can take a spirited journey through Poland's history, with a host of eccentric extras on the way. You may get sick of hearing about the Leonardo da Vinci, and the nineteenth century rooms are often inexplicably closed, but all things considered, this is an unmissable element in Cracow's cultural canon.

Czartoryski Museum

Such unpleasant Communist era "service" at the ticket office that we chose not to go in at all.

Well worth a visit even just to see the art exhibitions. We were so pleased to have seen the Da Vinci and the Rembrandt paintings. We didn't get the audio guide, because we were spending a short time in the museum prior to heading back to the airport, but if we'd had more time, we would have taken advantage of this option!

Our hotel receptionist recommended a visit. We had no idea what the place was about but as it was raining we thought we would give it ago. Truly amazing place with some fantastic pieces from mummies to a recovered Persian rug looted during the Second World War. The £3.40 entrance fee for two adults is ridiculously cheap for such a superb museum.

Nice little museum, but make sure the Da Vinci is actually there before you set off (if you are desperate to see it!) I have been to Cracow twice and both times the painting was away in other museums overseas! Nonetheless, worht visiting.
