The Gallery of 19th Century Polish Art in the Sukiennice

This gallery, which is located in the splendid Cloth Hall building, presents late eighteenth and nineteenth century Polish painting, the latter being an extraordinarily fruitful epoch in Polish art. The gallery emerged from a major overhaul in September 2010, and the results are a delight. The paintings by Piotr Michalowski are a revelation, and there are more than enough gems to make up for the duds. Even some of the less masterly works often communicate something valuable about Polish history. The gallery has some superb bonuses after the revamp in the form of a rooftop cafe and a hi-tech visitor centre with all mod cons. Open Tuesday-Saturday until 8 pm., Sunday (free admission) until 6 pm.
