Museum of Archaeology

This sprawling Old Town edifice has served variously as a palace, a monastery, a prison and today a museum. A notable collection of mummies will please fans of the macabre, whilst the legendary Pagan statue Swiatowid - plucked from the bed of the River Zbrucz a hundred years ago - is a standout. Pleasant garden.

I visited the Museum of Archaeology in June 2009. Although part of the museum is undergoing work, they did have some amazing collections available to view. In addition to two rooms where Egyptian mummies and other artefacts are on display, there was also a small Peruvian gallery. However, of more importance I felt were the galleries were they depicted the changes through the ages. In addition to a gallery showing landscape, vegetation and artefact changes they also had galleries highlighting settlement and tool changes including some 3D imaging of manufacturing development. The highlight for me though had to be the gallery showing burial changes through the ages. Definitely well-worth a visit!
